| New School Bus | ||||
| Intact Special School has been using a small jeep to transport children for several years. It was very difficult to transport the increased strength of the children with this small vehicle. Intacts Vänner has come forward to provide the school with a new School Bus which was procured in June 2004 and presented to the children. | ||||

| It started with a story. One of our visitors offered our children a visit to a pool in one of leading hotels in Tiruchirapalli. But the hotel management denied access to "mentally disabled children" due to the fear of loosing their clients. The idea of our own pool was born! The construction of pool is completed and presented for children in April 2005. Swimming and Pool Therapy is introduced in the weekly plan of lessons for all children from the school June 2005. Pool therapy helps children to get better flexibility in their bodies and relaxation. | ||||
| Community based Rehabilitation services | ||||

INTACT takes special schooling possibilities to the poor mentally challenged children in the remote villages through Community based rehabilitation (CBR) programmes. Educated young men and women from the local villages are imparted basic training in mental retardation and their services are used to train the children and their parents of their own village. Basic training on self-help and daily living skills are imparted to children and the parents and peers are educated to follow up the training and to offer basic physical exercises to the children apart from the awareness about mental retardation and the stigma against mental retardation prevalent in the society. CBR centres are periodically visited by Social worker and Special Educators. So far this programme is implemented in Manigandam block, Thuraiyur and Musiri blocks. 102 intellectually challenged children from poor families of remote villages are benefited. Sponsor-a-child programme enables to carryout CBR activities successfully. |

INTACT Special School identifies less privileged mentally challenged children and caters to their needs and reaches such children in remote villages through community based rehabilitation (CBR) services implemented through volunteers. INTACT intends to extend these services to many more mentally challenged children and looks forward the participation of benevolent friends. Interested friends from any part of world can contact ISS and become a sponsor for a needy child. |

Location of these tribal hamlets:
These villages are located on Kalvarayan hill stretches and one has to reach most of the villages only on foot. The base tribal hamlets, Elandavari or Muttal which are at the foot of the hill stretch can be reached by a vehicle from Thalaivasal or Attur, the nearest highway towns. From there other villages can be reached by foot. Elandavari is 15 kilometres from Thalaivasal at the northern side and 25 kilometres from Attur. Thalaivasal is 230 kilometres south-west of Chennai and 110 kilometres North of Tiruchirapalli.

Literacy and medical assistance for hill tribes |
It is a bitter fact that there are still many tribal belts in the country which are underdeveloped and lacking even basic facilities. Kalvarayan hill stretches are no exception. There are no approach roads, electricity, protected drinking water, educational institutions and health delivery system and so on. INTACT identified 20 such villages for providing medical assistance and woman-centric programmes. |

Monthly Medical Camps and referral services to the nearest hospitals are carried out regularly. Medicines are supplied free of cost to the tribals. About 2500 tribal people are being benefited every year through free medical assistance programme. Establishment of a Medical Clinic with a Doctor or Trained Nurse is the immediate need of the people. |

Although lot of developments taking place in this world, it is sad to observe that even today women are deprived of equal opportunities and it is more severe in rural areas. Women are barred to speak, work and socialize equally as men in the name of culture. This reflects directly in the education of girl children. Along with cultural barriers, the economic poorness of the families also prevents the girl children getting education in rural areas. The picture of education for girls on Kalrayan Hills was alarming . To liberate and empower women, INTACT support girl children to get educated which would guarantee a good quality of life in the future. Fostership help is offered to girls and parents are motivated to send girls to schools. Till date, 210 tribal girls are sent to various schools and hostels for education under this scheme. |

Girl child Fostership |
INTACT works with hill tribes on Kalrayan Hills since 1992 and has observed very closely the plight of women in the society. INTACT aims to bring out the potentials of girls and provide them a bright future and to bring a change in the society. In order to make this dream into reality this “Girls child fostership” scheme is implemented. This scheme helps the girls to take education as a source of escape from poverty and discrimination. This scheme will bring about lasting changes in the lives of girl children living in poverty. |

Family Sponsorship |
We face problems in continuity of girls’ education when the tribals are temporarily migrating in search of livelihood. To avoid dropping out from school we implement 'family sponsoring projects' in these villages. This project aims to improve the income of the families and the village at large. Animals like Goats, Sheep, Pigs and Chicken will be distributed to help the families to increase their family income. |
